Inter-jurisdictional comparisons of the data should be made with caution. 1. Admissions to custody data prior to 2005/2006 are excluded due to a change in the way that admissions to custody are calculated. Alberta uses a methodology whereby an admission to custody is counted once. In 2008/2009, Alberta reported 13,767 remanded admissions, 10,203 remanded later sentenced admissions and 8,306 sentenced admissions. In contrast, the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics' methodology counts an admission as movement from one status in correctional services to another (e.g., the movement of an individual from remand to sentenced custody would be counted as two admissions - one to remand and one to sentenced custody). This methodology results in a higher number of admissions than the number reported by the jurisdiction. 2. Includes intermittent sentences. 3. Typically includes offenders held in temporary detention for immigration purposes or parole suspension and generally excludes lock-up counts. 4. Excludes sentences of two years or more and as of 2005/2006, sentence lengths do not reflect the sentence ordered by the court. Rather, they reflect approximately two-thirds of the court-ordered sentence because remission is excluded. 5. Community data commencing in 2003/2004 are from the new Integrated Correctional Services Survey and have been tabulated from micro-data. Accordingly, comparisons to data from previous years should be made with caution. 6. As of 2005/2006 Provincial Parole are data for federal inmates released to full parole and mandatory supervision and supervised by a provincial officer.
